Introduced by the colonists as their main source of food, the goats of Saint-Barthélemy have now multiplied and are disrupting the islands ecosystem. By degrading the vegetation, they are weakening the soil and threatening local biodiversity. This reportage highlights the solutions planned and the limits encountered. It also explores the more global issues surrounding Invasive Alien Species (IAS) and the environmental challenges they suppose.
This reportage is part of a wider documentary the student is making on IAS or harmful species. As part of this, he wanted to highlight the problem of invasive alien species, particularly on islands, which are particularly vulnerable.
To produce this solutions journalism reportage, the student spent two and a half months in the West Indies to experience an enriching human and professional adventure.
First of all, a research phase enabled him to better understand the history of the introduction of goats to Saint-Barthélemy and their impact on the ecosystem. He consulted articles and scientific studies and got in touch with local people who knew their island very well.
He then organized interviews to get different points of view: a member of the INE association that captures and promotes the goats, a representative of the local authority involved in managing this issue, an island resident to get a more personal perspective and a local woman who is rather hostile to the capture of goats. For a question of duration, only the most efficient interviews have been included.
Last but not least, the reportage is scheduled to be broadcast on several platforms, including YouTube, Instagram and TikTok, in order to reach a wide audience and spark debate on this environmental issue.
